Marshall Sam's New Rules

Portland's ...ummmm...user-friendly Mayor Sam Adams is asking for citizen input (oh, Sam, no, not again!?) in regard to proposed new city ordinances concerning firearms.  And shame on you for even thinking otherwise.
http://www.portlandonline.com/shared/cfm/image.cfm?id=314191  is the link to the proposal document, all 12 pages, a relatively easy read, and probably available in Spanish by pressing "8.".

http://www.portlandonline.com/mayor/index.cfm?c=52750&a=314192  is the link to offer your verbal input to Mayor Adams.  Please be polite, pithy, and cogent.

One proposal is a tougher curfew on juveniles 14-17 years old, particularly if they have previously been found guilty of violating firearms laws...  That oughta take a bite out of crime.
Another facet is the criminilization of "recklessly having failed to remove all the ammunition from the firearm" carried in a "public place" by anyone.

"It is unlawful for any person to knowingly possess or carry a firearm and that firearm's clip or magazine, in or upon a public place, including while in a vehicle in a public place, recklessly having failed to remove all the ammunition from the clip or magazine."

A brilliant law, particularly in view of the fact that an empty gun is, at best, an oddly-shaped rock when it comes to self-defense.  Only Og the cave-dweller would willfully carry an unloaded weapon.  But you, my fellow citizen, even though protected by the Second Amendment, will face a possible fine of $500.00 American, and a potential 6-month imprisonment (best brush up on your Spanish) and a mandatory 30-days in stir if you have a loaded gun in your own vehicle or in a "public vehicle."
Fortunately, persons possessing a valid Concealed Handgun License (readily available from your County Sheriff  and honored in most other counties and states) are exempted from this ludicrous prohibition.  At last, a glimmer of common sense.

While I do appreciate Mayor Adams' zeal, particularly in view of the recent outbreak of Portland's annual August Gangsta Herd-Thinning, perhaps the wholesale shredding of the Constitutional rights of Portland's law-abiding citizens is not an altogether wise step toward Peace in Our Town.

I shall remain, as ever, locked and loaded.  Perhaps you should, too.

  1. After reading mayor feelanythings gun proposal (and after wiping the tears of hysterical laughter from my eyes,) I read many of the reader's comments;most of them made more sense than adams did.
